Ad managers are breaking ToS, and nothing is being done about it.
So there is a phenomenon on Discord, and it originated within the advertisement selling community. What happens is that servers that offer paid services (typically giveaway pings and other events that send many members to your server) hire people to message as many prospects (potential customers) as they can whom they believe may be interested in buying their services. They typically target people who had bought ads from other servers in the past, or people and sell advertisements. They target as many people as possible because they are desperate for money.
These individuals who go around DMing as many prospects as they can find to 'buy ads', are typically representatives of Giveaway servers, and they are usually paid by the owner to obtain customers, or they are the owners themselves. Their typical message when offering their services are 'Want to buy ad?' or 'Looking for adds?" or something along those lines. These people often mention the size of their server, which is often misleading as size does not correlate to quality.
Now here's the problem. These DM advertisements are always unsolicited. They by definition break Discord's ToS because they are unsolicited marketing messages. They are in my mind, almost as frustrating as dealing with those who send DM invites, only they are rarely spammed to large groups of users. The issue is that the amount of people who do this is overwhelming. Many individuals are spammed by these advertisers, to the point where they could very well be receiving one, two, or even more of these unsolicited messages EVERY DAY and it is INFURIATING.
When I first started buying ads, I was instantly approached by dozens of these sellers all within the same time frame. I had to deny all of them politely. It was absolutely infuriating, like dealing with ants, and I had to close my DMs to friends only because of how many of these messages kept popping up.
And what's worse, is many of these individuals still attempted to contact me via modmail or through others, rendering many of them unavoidable. Today I could honestly say that I have probably been approached by 100 or so people trying to get me to buy ads through unsolicited messages. Imagine going to a supermarket to buy food. That's fine yeah? Now imagine hundreds of representatives from supermarkets going to your home to sell you products you don't want. Well that is essentially the same phenomenon as this.
So my suggestion would be that we as a community need to do a better job doing something about these people, because it's incredibly frustrating that buyers have to deal with dozens of these individuals with no repercussions. However at the very least it may be wise to close DMs to friends only so that these people can't reach your DMs with their advertisements.
