A common complaint I see on Discord servers is that tons of people join, and leave right after. It's such a widespread problem that it demoralizes a lot of people, discourages them, and makes them feel hopeless.
I would like to encourage those of you who feel this way by reminding you of a few things.
First is that when you advertise from public platforms, you will inevitably encounter many of what's known as 'server hoppers'. These are people who browse many, often dozens of servers at a time. They typically take a peek and leave shortly after. You might be thinking that these individuals should give you a chance, but remember that they are doing this in many other servers, not just your own. Many of these users don't settle in any of the servers they browse either.
Second I would like to remind you that while most people don't stay for very long, some do. At least, if your server is good, there should still be many users who stick around for a while. In the case of Moonlit Cafe for example, we obviously find ourselves dealing with many of these server hoppers, and we welcome them all. However, I see it similar to the act of fishing. Most of the fish you catch are going to be common fish, but all the time spent fishing is worth it once you reel in something big.
I hope this helps some of you. Don't be discouraged by server hoppers. Instead, allow any members who actually stick around and chat to motivate you to continue making your server a great and fun place.
