What I learned about advertising this year.
A lot has happened over the 5 months of DGP existing. I met a lot of people, gained tremendous insight, and grew from 0 to 5800 members as I am typing this. As I have grown the server, I have been trying to share my methods for free with with those who wished to learn. I have always done this, because I believe it's fun to share insight that hasn't been documented by others. I am hoping in the future that I will write articles for some popular guide sites, but for now I mainly write here instead. Most people know me as the person who grows and founded DGP, but what they don't know is that I have grown communities for many different types of servers aside from advertising, so I have insight as to what works on a broader basis of Discord servers.
Based on what I know from helping other users grow their servers, as well as working with several different kinds of my own, I have learned that certain server types are far easier to grow than others, and I will dive a bit into that.
Fast Growing:
16+ Community Discord Servers
18+ Community Discord Servers
Anarchy Servers
Dating Servers
Certain NSFW Servers
Certain Roleplay Servers
Advertising Servers
Anime Theme
LGBTQ+ Friendly
Certain Niche Gaming Servers
Giveaway Servers (Make sure these are honest)
In general, servers that provide an active social environment and active VC seem to excel pretty well. Somewhat edgy servers are more likely to excel because people enjoy using Discord as an outlet to be themselves and let off steam. Social servers will often do well with a general chat, meme channel, venting channel, selfies channel, and more. Providing a unique theme to your server is also a nice way to stand out, because themes are one of the few aspects of a server that make them very unique.
Slow Growing:
Rare Hobby Servers
Unpopular Focus
TV Show Servers
Sports Servers
Music Servers
+Many Others
What can help these and other types of servers to grow faster sometimes is to mix them with other categories. This isn't always necessary but it can help with tags, and allow you to post your server into more categories on listing servers. Relying on people to join only for only one focus is most of the time a bad idea. You want to be able to provide something for greater quantities of people, and you can achieve this by having several focuses which will also allow you to come up with a stronger set of tags.
Some growth tips:
Now let's discuss growth tips again. DISBOARD will usually be your primary source to grow because it's free and effective. In this case, it's very important that you use strong tags because this is how your server gets noticed. Here are a few common errors you should never make the mistake of doing when adding tags to your server.
Do NOT do the following:
Use under 5 tags. (This is never a good idea.)
Use multiple words in a tag. (Ex: Very-Fun-Server)
Use words that are very unlikely to be searched. (Ex: Nice, Relaxing, Chat, Discord)
Use common filler words as tags. (You often want to get specific!)
Focus on key words that you could probably see yourself searching if you were looking for a server. If your server is based on a video game console, for example, Playstation, it could be a good idea to make most of your tags popular Playstation franchises, and obviously you will want Playstation to be used as a tag as well. If your server is a 16+ community, try using tags like 16+, active, meme, and other tags that are relevant to your server that you think might receive searches. If it doesn't work out, then play with your tags until you find a set that leads to better growth. Combining two categories can also lead to growth. For example, an 18+ dating server. This could potentially create greater traffic than just an 18+ server or dating server alone would. This same principle can apply to different server typs.

Some other tidbits:
Nitro boosted servers with all emoji slots filled can help boost interest in your server.
Social servers that offer advertising channels can help to boost interest.
Servers providing games, voice calls, streams, etc can boost traffic.
